French actresses and plastic surgery: the short answer
- They admitted it: Emmanuelle Béart (her lips, at 27), Josiane Balasko and Liane Foly (their noses), Line Renaud (her eyelids) and the singer Vitaa (reconstructive breast surgery).
- They say no: Brigitte Bardot (never any cosmetic surgery), Sophie Marceau (never Botox), Charlotte Gainsbourg (she decided not to change her nose) and Alexandra Lamy (she denies any surgery).
- Unconfirmed rumours: Isabelle Adjani and Catherine Deneuve have never confirmed any procedure.
- The medical side: every procedure has a known duration, recovery time and set of risks, explained below with medical sources.
French actresses’ plastic surgery fascinates people almost as much as their beauty. Who really had her nose, lips or eyelids done, and who is ageing without a scalpel? In this guide we keep only what the stars themselves have said, in interviews reported by recognised media, and we clearly flag what is only a rumour.
For each star, from Brigitte Bardot to Charlotte Gainsbourg, you will find her best-known work, the controversy or rumour that targeted her, her answer, and then the medical explanation of the procedure in question: what it does, how long it lasts, its risks and its recovery. Our tone stays admiring: the aim is not to judge a face, but to understand a choice.
French Actresses Plastic Surgery: Nose, Lips, Eyelids and Breast Procedures
Five French stars have spoken openly about a procedure: Emmanuelle Béart, Josiane Balasko, Liane Foly, Line Renaud and Vitaa. Others have said publicly that they refuse surgery or injections, and two of the biggest names are only the subject of rumours that were never confirmed.

| Star | What is confirmed | Status |
| Emmanuelle Béart | Lips done at 27, a result she calls botched | Admitted |
| Josiane Balasko | Rhinoplasty early in her career | Admitted |
| Liane Foly | Rhinoplasty in 1997, never a facelift | Admitted |
| Line Renaud | Eyelid surgery in the 1970s | Admitted |
| Vitaa | Reconstructive breast surgery after breastfeeding | Admitted |
| Brigitte Bardot | Said she never had cosmetic surgery | Stated refusal |
| Sophie Marceau | Says she will never use Botox | Stated refusal |
| Charlotte Gainsbourg | Thought about a nose job, then decided against it | Stated refusal |
| Alexandra Lamy | Denies any cosmetic surgery | Denied |
| Isabelle Adjani, Catherine Deneuve | No procedure confirmed | Rumours only |
This table is built only from statements reported by the press, cited in each section below. A photo alone never proves an operation: lighting, makeup, lenses and weight change a face from one year to the next.
Brigitte Bardot and the Facelift She Rejected: What the Surgery Does
No, in her own words: Brigitte Bardot said she never had cosmetic surgery and had accepted ageing, even though it was not easy. She also said she did not understand women who have facelifts, and that seeing images of her past hurt her a great deal (Source: La Libre Belgique).
Made a star by And God Created Woman (1956), she appeared in about 50 films before giving up acting in 1973 to devote herself to animal protection, through the foundation that has carried her name since 1986. She died on 28 December 2025 at her home, La Madrague, in Saint-Tropez, aged 91, and President Emmanuel Macron called her a «legend» (Source: AFP).

The facelift she rejected, medically explained: a facelift lifts and repositions the skin of the face, mainly around the jowls and neck. It takes about 2 to 3 hours, usually under general anaesthetic with one night in hospital; full recovery takes 2 to 4 weeks, bruising stays visible for at least 2 weeks and the final result shows at 6 to 9 months. Specific risks include nerve injury, asymmetry, hair loss near the scars and thick scars (Source: NHS).
A Face Like Catherine Deneuve: How Botulinum Toxin Works
Nothing confirms it: Catherine Deneuve has never said publicly that she had cosmetic surgery, and no recognised outlet reports any admission. A line about choosing between your face and your figure is often attributed to her online, but without a dated interview that would allow it to be checked.
The icon of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), Belle de Jour (1967), The Last Metro (1980) and Indochine (1992) remains one of the most admired French actresses in the world. Her face is often held up as an example of ageing «the French way», but without any statement from her, every claim about injections is speculation.

What people often suspect in stars, explained: botulinum toxin injections relax the muscles that cause expression lines. The effect appears within a few days, peaks after about a week and usually lasts three to four months. Possible side effects are bruising, headache and temporary weakness or drooping of part of the face; the treated area should not be rubbed, so the product does not spread (Sources: ASPS, ASPS).
Isabelle Adjani and a Smooth Face: Dermal Fillers, Duration and Risks
Isabelle Adjani has never confirmed cosmetic surgery; in 2022, asked by Le Parisien about her very smooth face in the TV series Diane de Poitiers (France 2), she denied any digital retouching and credited lighting, lenses and the work of her long-time makeup artist (Source: Cinésérie / Le Parisien).
The record holder with five César awards for best actress, from Possession to Skirt Day by way of Camille Claudel and Queen Margot, she went on to shine in Masquerade (2022). That same year, her masked and gloved appearance on the talk show «C à vous» set tongues wagging: some viewers suspected a hidden injection or operation. She explained that she had bronchiolitis, treated with cortisone and codeine (Source: Paris Match).

Dermal fillers, what you should know: hyaluronic acid fillers smooth wrinkles or restore volume to the cheeks, chin or lips. Common effects are bruising, redness and swelling, but the most serious risk is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can lead to skin death (necrosis), vision problems including blindness, and stroke. The FDA warns against buying these products online and says needle-free pens are not approved for injecting them (Source: FDA).
Emmanuelle Béart and Lip Augmentation: Approved Fillers and Risks
Because the result was botched: Emmanuelle Béart told Le Monde in 2012 that she had her mouth done at 27, an experience she called frightening. She has since said she is against plastic surgery, which she calls «a grave act», and that the very idea of an injection upsets her, while not judging women who choose it (Source: NBC News / Le Monde).
The star of Manon of the Spring (1986), Un cœur en hiver (1992), Mission: Impossible (1996) and 8 Women (2002) was mocked for years over her lips, and chose to speak out to warn younger women. She has not given public details of the product or technique used at the time, and we will not guess.

Lip augmentation today: in the United States, lip augmentation is an approved use for some absorbable fillers in adults aged 22 and over. Injectable silicone, by contrast, is not approved for any aesthetic use: it can cause long-term pain, infection, scarring, embolism and stroke. Depending on the product and the person, a filler lasts from several months to several years (Sources: FDA, ASPS).
Sophie Marceau and Botox: Side Effects a Doctor Explains Before Treatment
No, according to her: Sophie Marceau told Femme Actuelle that she would never use Botox, «if only to avoid the unnatural look» on the face, and that she prefers a plant-based cosmetic gel (Source: Paris Match).
Discovered at 13 in La Boum (1980), then an international star with Braveheart (1995) and the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999), she is one of the best-loved faces of French cinema. Her refusal of injections makes her, for many fans, a model of natural beauty, but no star can «prove» a natural face: only her statements count.

Botox: what a doctor explains before the session: botulinum toxin is a temporary treatment, and you can return to normal activities straight away. Reported side effects are bruising and pain at the injection site, headache, flu-like symptoms and temporary weakness of part of the face; spread of the toxin beyond the area, with trouble swallowing or breathing, is very unlikely but described. That temporary weakness is what sometimes gives the «frozen» look the actress says she wants to avoid; the effect fades within three to four months (Sources: ASPS, ASPS).
Charlotte Gainsbourg and Rhinoplasty: Steps, Anaesthesia and Hospital Stay
No: Charlotte Gainsbourg told the American site The Cut that she hated her nose and had considered having it done, but her father, Serge Gainsbourg, talked her out of it, telling her that a big nose shows character. So she kept her nose (Source: La DH).

A César winner as early as An Impudent Girl (1985), best actress at Cannes for Antichrist (2009), she paid tribute to her mother in the documentary Jane by Charlotte (2021). She has said she felt like «the ugly duckling» of a very beautiful family; her father cited a singer whose nose, in his view, lost its personality after an operation (Source: La DH).

Rhinoplasty, step by step: the operation changes the shape or size of the nose, usually under general anaesthetic, in 1.5 to 3 hours, with 1 or 2 nights in hospital. A splint protects the nose for 7 days, bruising around the eyes lasts about 3 weeks, most people return to work after about 2 weeks and to strenuous exercise after 4 to 6 weeks. Specific risks are lasting breathing difficulty, damage to the septum, a changed sense of smell and nosebleeds; in the UK it costs £4,000 to £7,000. Swelling can come and go, and it may take up to a year for the new nasal contour to fully refine (Sources: NHS, ASPS).
Josiane Balasko and Nose Reduction: Open or Closed Rhinoplasty
Because her nose bothered her: Josiane Balasko said on France 2’s Télématin in June 2026 that, early in her career, a makeup artist advised her to refuse to be filmed in profile. Christian Clavier, her colleague from the Splendid troupe, then referred her to his father, a cosmetic doctor. She had already told Paris Match in 2012 that she feared getting her mother’s nose as she aged (Source: Orange Actu).
Unforgettable in Les Bronzés (1978) and Le Père Noël est une ordure (1982), and the director of French Twist (1995), she published her third novel, Le dernier sanctuaire, in June 2026. Her frank, humorous account was warmly received by the public (Source: Orange Actu).
Reducing a nose, in practice: the surgeon can remove cartilage and bone, or add grafts, through an open approach (a small cut between the nostrils) or a closed one (cuts inside the nose, with no visible scar). Breathing through the nose is difficult for about a week afterwards, and the full result only shows after several months. In Turkey, with surgeons contracted by International Clinics, rhinoplasty costs $2,500–4,500 (approx. £1,900–3,400); see our guide nose job Turkey cost (Source: NHS).
Liane Foly and Rhinoplasty: Side Effects and an Unsatisfying Result
Yes: the singer and impressionist Liane Foly confirmed a nose job in 1997, because her nose made her self-conscious, and says she has «never had a facelift», whatever the public thinks. She said it again in April 2023 on France Bleu radio, without ruling out changing her mind one day (Source: Paris Match).
Known for the hit Au fur et à mesure and for her impressions shows, she launched her third one-woman show, La folle repart en thèse, at the Théâtre des Variétés in 2023. She says the operation got more attention than her music at the time, proof that public curiosity did not start with social media (Source: Paris Match).
What if you don’t like the result? Rhinoplasty is not a trivial procedure: the NHS lists a stiff, numb nose, breathing difficulty and light nosebleeds in the first days among its common side effects, and recalls the general risks of any surgery, such as infection, blood clots and reaction to the anaesthetic. Revision is possible, but it is planned once the swelling has settled; see real photos in our rhinoplasty before and after gallery (Source: NHS).
Line Renaud and Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgery, Duration and Anaesthesia
Eyelid surgery: Line Renaud has said that in the 1970s her slightly drooping eyelids could no longer hold the false lashes she wore for her revue at the Casino de Paris. For the rest of her face, she says she let gravity take its course. On Léa Salamé’s podcast she added that she had it done only once: «It took half an hour and it didn’t come back» (Sources: Purepeople, Purepeople).
The singer of Ma cabane au Canada, the actress of Welcome to the Sticks (2008) and a long-time campaigner against AIDS, she remains a much-loved figure. In January 2026, at 97, she denied rumours that she had been hospitalised: «I am very, very well at the start of 2026» (Source: Paris Match).
Blepharoplasty, the world’s number one cosmetic operation: it removes excess skin or fat from the eyelids, through a cut hidden in the crease for the upper lid. It is done under local or general anaesthetic, in 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, usually as a day case; most people take about 2 weeks off, and bruising can take several weeks to fade. Risks include dry or watery eyes, temporary blurred vision, asymmetry and, rarely, a lower lid that turns outward; in the UK it costs about £2,000 to £6,000. After surgery, the eyes should be protected from the sun with tinted glasses until healing is complete. In 2024, eyelid surgery became the most performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the world, with more than 2.1 million operations. Vitaa and Breast Surgery After Breastfeeding: Lift or Implants
After three pregnancies: the singer Vitaa told the magazine Nous Deux in August 2025 that she had reconstructive surgery on her breasts because she had breastfed her three children. She believes aesthetic medicine, used wisely, can help people age better, but worries about an «addiction» among younger people (Source: Paris Match).
Known for Confessions nocturnes, her duet with Diam’s, and for her duet albums with Slimane, she is making her acting debut in the TV serial Tout pour la lumière. Her honesty was welcomed by many mothers who recognise themselves in a body changed by breastfeeding (Source: Paris Match).
What breast surgery after breastfeeding does: pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, age and heredity make breasts lose their firmness. A breast lift (mastopexy) removes excess skin and raises the breasts, but does not really change their size: for more volume it is combined with an augmentation. Vitaa did not say which technique she had. If implants are used, the French society of plastic surgeons notes that breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is exceptional, does not justify preventive removal, and that yearly follow-up is advised. In Turkey, with surgeons contracted by International Clinics, breast augmentation costs $4,400 (approx. £3,300) with Arion implants and $5,200 (approx. £3,900) with Motiva implants; see how much is a boob job in Turkey and breast lift before and after (Sources: ASPS, SOFCPRE).
Alexandra Lamy: How Makeup and Lighting Can Mimic Plastic Surgery
No, according to her: in March 2023, when a fan accused her of «going under the knife» after the premiere of La Chambre des merveilles, Alexandra Lamy replied with humour on Twitter that she had not had cosmetic surgery, and that it was rather a good sign: she was «still fresh». Her reply got more than 22,000 likes (Source: Paris Match).
Made famous by the TV series Un gars, une fille, she has since moved between comedy and drama. Her case shows how a single premiere photo can start a rumour: makeup, lighting and photo editing can change a face without any procedure.
French Actresses Without Surgery and Global Botox and Filler Figures
No one can certify it, because a «natural» face cannot be proven from photos; we can only name the stars who said they refused a specific procedure: Brigitte Bardot (no cosmetic surgery), Sophie Marceau (no Botox), Charlotte Gainsbourg (no rhinoplasty) and Alexandra Lamy (no surgery) (Sources: La Libre Belgique, Paris Match, La DH, Paris Match).
What is certain is that aesthetic procedures have become common: in 2024, nearly 38 million were performed worldwide, including 7.8 million botulinum toxin injections and 6.3 million hyaluronic acid injections. For other celebrity transformations, read famous facelift before and after, Madonna plastic surgery and Nicole Kidman plastic surgery (Source: ISAPS).
The same facts-first approach covers stars from other countries: Hollywood actresses and plastic surgery, Italian actresses and their cosmetic procedures, Spanish actresses and plastic surgery, Arab actresses and plastic surgery, Russian actresses and plastic surgery and Iranian actresses and cosmetic surgery.
Appearance Rumours and Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Screening Before Surgery
Because they target appearance, a very sensitive point: Emmanuelle Béart described her botched operation as a frightening experience, and several actresses have had to answer public comments about their faces (Sources: NBC News / Le Monde, Paris Match).
Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition in which a person is preoccupied with flaws in their appearance that are often barely noticeable to others: they compare their looks, check mirrors constantly or avoid them altogether. It is treated with cognitive behavioural therapy and, if needed, an antidepressant. A meta-analysis of 65 studies estimates that 18.6% of aesthetic surgery patients have the disorder, which is why screening before any procedure matters (Sources: NHS, Kaleeny & Janis, 2024).
A Natural Result: Questions to Ask, Approved Products and Recovery Time

- Why now, and for whom? A decision made under pressure from a comment or a rumour is often regretted, as Emmanuelle Béart has said (Source: NBC News / Le Monde).
- Ask for the written information sheet for your procedure: the French society of plastic surgeons has one for each operation, from the nose to the eyelids and injections (Source: SOFCPRE).
- For injections, insist on a qualified practitioner and an approved product, never one bought online (Source: FDA).
- Plan the real recovery: about 2 weeks off work for rhinoplasty, 2 weeks for eyelids and 2 to 4 weeks for a facelift (Sources: NHS, NHS, NHS).
