How to Increase Penis Size? Naturally and Surgically

Smart Digest
  • How to increase penis size has no safe, proven and permanent non-surgical answer.
  • Mayo Clinic states there is little scientific support for nonsurgical methods and that no trusted medical organization endorses penis surgery for purely cosmetic reasons.
  • Traction devices are the only non-surgical method with any measured result: a few small studies report half an inch to almost 2 inches (about 1 to 3 cm), and only with 4 to 6 hours of daily wear for many months.
  • Pumps enlarge the penis temporarily and can damage elastic tissue if overused.
  • Pills, lotions and jelqing have no proven effect.

As you may already know, the purpose of penile augmentation techniques is to make the penis bigger or more attractive.

For many years, people have spoken about and carried out penile enlargement treatments of different natures and mechanisms.

Men with congenital and acquired penile conditions, such as micropenis, a buried penis, Peyronie’s disease and other anatomical malformations, are the people for whom surgery may have a medical reason (Source: Cleveland Clinic, ISSM).

Penile augmentation is, however, also sought by many men who are merely unhappy with the size or look of their penis, even though the International Society for Sexual Medicine does not recommend these procedures for cosmetic purposes in men who are only dissatisfied with their size (Source: ISSM).

There is greater debate over the use of these treatments for men who have functional, normal-sized penises but are unhappy with their length, girth, or look.

After all, these procedures are often carried out on men who have good erections and are not intended to cure erectile dysfunction.

How to increase penis size: an overview of surgical and non-surgical options

How to Increase Penis Size?

Techniques marketed to increase penis size include surgery, supplements, ointments, patches, and physical methods like pumping, jelqing, and traction. However, the International Society for Sexual Medicine says there is no scientific evidence that any nonsurgical method increases penis length or girth (Source: ISSM).

What the evidence actually shows

MethodWhat it doesTypical reported changeIs it permanent?Main risk
Pills, lotions and supplementsMarketed as enlargers; none proved to workNone demonstratedNoDangerous hidden drug ingredients (FDA warnings)
Vacuum pumpsDraw blood in, making the penis swellTemporary appearance onlyNoInjury if used too aggressively
Jelqing and manual exercisesHand-over-hand motion pushing blood toward the headNo proven changeNoPossible injury; no proven benefit
Traction devices (extenders)Apply gentle sustained tensionSmall: about 0.4 to 1.7 cm of stretched length in small trialsOnly while use continues; evidence limitedMust be worn for hours a day (at least 4 hours in one trial) for months; discomfort
Weight loss and groomingReveal length hidden by the pubic fat padVisible length only, no anatomical changeLasts while weight is maintainedNone beyond normal weight management
Girth surgery (fat transfer or grafts)Adds tissue around the shaftVariable; AUA says fat injection is not shown to be safe or effectiveVariable; results can be uneven over timeInfection, lumpiness, scarring, deformity
Suspensory ligament releaseReleases the ligament so more shaft sits outside the bodyMainly a longer-hanging flaccid penis; modest gains in small seriesCan shorten again if the ligament reattachesShaft instability, re-shortening, pain, loss of sensation

The International Society for Sexual Medicine sums up the field: no scientific evidence supports any nonsurgical method for increasing penis length or girth, and enlargement procedures are not recommended for cosmetic purposes. The American Urological Association likewise states that fat injection for girth and division of the suspensory ligament for length have not been shown to be safe or effective, and traction is the only nonsurgical method with small measured gains in trials. Everything below is written against that benchmark (Source: ISSM, AUA, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, Cleveland Clinic).

1. Penis Pumps

Vacuum pumps temporarily increase penis size by drawing blood into the organ and are primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction. While they can make the penis appear larger temporarily, they do not produce permanent penis growth: Cleveland Clinic states that a vacuum pump does not produce lasting increases in size, and urologists caution against using one too aggressively (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

2. Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises target the pelvic floor muscles, which help control blood flow to the penis during an erection and give greater control over when you ejaculate. Kegels do not increase penis length or girth, so they are not a way to get a bigger penis naturally, but they can support erections and ejaculation control (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

3. Jelqing and Stretching Exercises

Jelqing and other stretching exercises involve manually massaging or stretching the penis in the hope of expanding the tissue. The International Society for Sexual Medicine lists jelqing among the methods with no scientific evidence of increasing length or girth, and Cleveland Clinic warns that some enlargement methods can damage the penis, so these exercises are not a proven way to increase penis length (Source: ISSM, Cleveland Clinic).

4. Penile Extenders

Traction devices, also known as penile extenders or penis enlargers, attach to the flaccid penis and apply gentle, consistent tension over time. Users typically wear them for several hours a day for weeks or months. Small trials have reported gains in stretched length of roughly 0.4 to 1.7 cm after three to six months, with daily wear of at least 4 hours in one trial, and reviewers say larger trials with longer follow-up are still needed. Cleveland Clinic puts the realistic gain at maybe half an inch over months of regular stretching. Men looking to enlarge their penis using extenders should follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, as results vary between individuals (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, Cleveland Clinic).

5. Penis Implants and Surgery

A penile implant, or prosthesis, is a surgical option for men with severe erectile dysfunction when medications are ineffective. It involves placing a device inside the penis to allow for rigid erections. The device does not affect sensation, urination or orgasm and can restore sexual function, but it is a treatment for erectile dysfunction, not a way to lengthen a normal penis. Some enlargement procedures do increase length or girth, but they carry risks including infection, scarring, a bend or kink in the penis, loss of sensation or pain, erectile dysfunction and dissatisfaction with the result. Consultation with a qualified specialist is essential before proceeding (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

6. Fat Transfer

Penile augmentation with autologous fat injections involves harvesting fat from the patient’s body, purifying it, and injecting it into the penis to enhance girth. Part of the injected fat is reabsorbed at an unpredictable rate, complications include nodules, scarring and deformity, and a fatal fat embolism has been reported. The American Urological Association states that fat injection for penile girth has not been shown to be safe or effective. Fat transfer targets girth, not length, for men looking to increase penis size in girth (Source: AUA, Chen et al., Current Urology, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

7. Weight Loss

Excess weight around the abdomen and genital area can hide part of the penis, and Cleveland Clinic notes that weight loss alone may cure a buried penis. Keeping a healthy weight also lowers the risk of erectile dysfunction. Weight loss does not change anatomical size, but it can reveal hidden length and help men appear to have a bigger penis (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

8. Male Enhancement Pills, Pills, Lotions, and Supplements

FDA-approved medications like Sildenafil (Viagra) and Tadalafil (Cialis) improve blood flow to the penis, resulting in firmer erections. These require consultation with a healthcare professional to ensure safety. However, there is no scientific evidence that over-the-counter pills, lotions, or supplements can permanently increase penis size. Many are unregulated and may contain harmful or undeclared ingredients, which can cause dangerous interactions or side effects. Men looking to increase penis length or get a bigger penis should be cautious with these products (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, FDA).

Non-Surgical Treatments

You can find products that contain hormones, vitamins, minerals, or plants that are said to increase penis size.

There is no clinical proof, however, that these products are effective, and some may even be hazardous, despite their great promises (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that products sold for sexual enhancement are likely to be contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients, can lead to severe health problems and hospitalization, and are not guaranteed to work (Source: FDA).

Another option is the Penis Enlargement Injections and penis pumps, which generate a vacuum by covering the penis with a tube and then pumping out the air.

The penis swells as a result of the vacuum drawing blood into it, and the device is used to produce an erection in men with erectile dysfunction. However, a pump does not produce lasting increases in size, and urologists caution against using it too aggressively (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

Jelqing is a technique promoted to increase the size of an erection by repeatedly tugging the penis with the thumb and index finger. Is it the answer to how to actually increase penis size? No: there is no scientific evidence that it increases length or girth (Source: ISSM).

The theory behind the tugging workouts is that they will improve the erectile tissues’ blood capacity, which is said to expand the penis’s length and circumference.

Penis Surgery

So, how to increase penis size and girth through surgery?

To increase the girth of the penis, injecting fat from another area of the body into the penis is one surgical method used to enhance penile circumference.

Individual studies report a range of circumference gains, but reviewers note that there are no guidelines or standardised techniques, and the American Urological Association states that fat injection for girth has not been shown to be safe or effective (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, AUA).

These surgeries are associated with problems including infection, scarring, a bend or kink in the penis, loss of sensation or pain, erectile dysfunction and dissatisfaction with the result (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

If you are considering surgery abroad, read our guide to Penis Enlargement Surgery Cost in Turkey and discuss the risks with a urologist first.

Cutting the suspensory ligament that connects the penis to the pubic bone is the most widely described surgical method for penis lengthening (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

This mainly lets the non-erect penis hang longer; gains reported in small series are modest, the cut ligament can reattach and shorten the penis again, and the American Urological Association states that dividing the suspensory ligament has not been shown to be safe or effective (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, AUA). Penile implants in Turkey are a separate option used to treat ED, not to lengthen a normal penis.

How to Increase Penis Size at Home?

So, how to increase penis size naturally? No home method changes the anatomy of the penis, but some habits can make more of it visible or support firmer erections:

Reduce weight because a beer belly hanging over your penis can make it appear smaller; losing weight reveals length hidden by fat but does not make the penis larger (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Stop smoking, because smoking raises the risk of erectile dysfunction, and quitting can improve mild erectile dysfunction over several months (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Eat a healthy diet low in saturated fat and cut back on alcohol, which may lower the risk of erectile dysfunction; no food makes the penis longer (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Reduce your stress levels, as stress and anxiety can contribute to erectile dysfunction (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Trim your pubic hair because a large pile of pubic hair can make your penis appear smaller than it is. This changes how the penis looks, not its size.

Regular vigorous exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming or cycling, may reverse some mild cases of erectile dysfunction, but it does not change penis size (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

How to Increase Penis Size in Ayurveda?

Ayurvedic treatments focus on improving erectile quality, blood circulation, and overall sexual vitality, which may enhance the "fullness" or appearance of the organ during arousal

Ayurveda uses herbal remedies, oils, dietary changes, along with Jelqing and Kegels exercises to improve sexual vitality, blood flow, and erection quality, aiming for better performance and perceived size, though no Ayurvedic method has been scientifically proven to enlarge the penis.

The ancient Indian medical system known as “Ayurveda” promotes health and wellness by using holistic methods and natural therapies.

For millennia, Ayurveda has been used to treat a variety of illnesses, including male sexual dysfunctions like tiny penises or problems getting a full erection.

Ayurveda claims that several medicines can efficiently expand the penis’s length and circumference.

Many people truly swear by the effectiveness of these ayurvedic drugs to expand the size of the penis (male sex organ), even though there is no scientific proof to support its restorative effects.

Common herbs used in Ayurvedic treatments for penile enlargement include ashwagandha, gokshura, shatavari, and kapikacchu.

Supplements like Safed Musli, Shilajit, and Vidarikanda are also used, as are topical oils like Ashwagandha Oil and Bala Oil.

None of these herbs has been shown to enlarge the penis: the International Society for Sexual Medicine finds no scientific evidence for supplements or other nonsurgical methods, and the FDA warns that products sold for sexual enhancement may contain dangerous hidden drug ingredients (Source: ISSM, FDA).

How to Increase Penis Size Permanently?

The portion of your penis that extends within your body and is not visible from the outside is a joke of male anatomy.

If you reach up through the skin and beneath your testicles, you can feel it. Your pubic bone is connected to this buried portion by suspensory ligaments.

They assist and maintain an erection pointing upwards instead of downward, which is the penis’s natural position, but they have no effect on the penis itself.

Cutting these ligaments lets more of the shaft hang outside the body, mainly when flaccid, but small series report modest gains, the ligament can reattach, and the American Urological Association says the procedure has not been shown to be safe or effective (Source: AUA, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

A penile prosthesis or implant is designed to treat erectile dysfunction, not to lengthen the penis: in one series 72% of patients reported a decrease in length after implantation, although measurements show the surgery itself does not reduce size compared with stretched length before surgery (Source: Chen et al., Current Urology).

How to Use a Penis Pump to Increase Size?

Penis pumps can be recommended as a possible therapy option for erectile dysfunction or penile rehabilitation following prostate surgery.

They are also used as a sex toy and as a potential penis workout. They use water or air pressure to create a vacuum inside the penis pump’s cylinder.

The suction draws blood into the penis and produces an erection, which is why pumps are used to treat erectile dysfunction (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Claims that months of pumping add one to three inches permanently are not supported by evidence. Cleveland Clinic states that a vacuum pump does not produce lasting increases in size, and in one small trial of vacuum therapy only 11% of men gained at least 1 cm (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

If a doctor recommends a pump for erectile dysfunction, use a medical device and follow your doctor’s instructions; it is a treatment for erections, not a way to increase girth.

How to Increase Penis Head Size?

The size of the glans penis (penis head) can be increased temporarily with fillers, which some men seek for a fuller-looking glans.

Patients should be advised that studies of penile hyaluronic acid injections report decreased sensitivity in some men, that satisfaction fell significantly between 1 and 18 months, and that complications such as nodules, bleeding under the skin and infection occur (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, Chen et al., Current Urology).

Interestingly, many specialized procedures or surgeries can achieve Penile Glans Enlargement.

How to Increase Penis Size Without Pills?

The phrase "penis stretching" implies that you may develop the length and circumference of your penis in the same manner as you develop your chest or arm muscles.

The phrase is used by producers of "penis exercise" equipment to suggest that you may use their goods to enlarge your penis.

The use of these devices is not supported by scientific evidence, and some methods can even damage the penis (Source: ISSM, Cleveland Clinic).

Additionally, a variety of penis-enlargement equipment is available, such as penis pumps and penile traction devices, but only traction has shown small, measured gains in trials, and vacuum therapy has no confirmed benefit for penile enlargement (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

How to Increase Flaccid Penis Size?

Fat injection, tissue grafting and implants have been used to increase flaccid penis size, but they carry real risks, and the American Urological Association does not consider fat injection for girth safe or effective (Source: AUA, Cleveland Clinic).

On size itself, Cleveland Clinic puts the average erect penis at about 5.4 inches (13.8 cm) and the average flaccid penis at about 3.6 inches (9.2 cm). In adults, micropenis is diagnosed when the stretched flaccid length is 2.67 inches (6.8 cm) or less (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

How to Increase Penis Size During Puberty?

The typical penis size ranges widely. It’s likely that your penis is a typical size, even if you could see males with penises that are larger or smaller than yours.

Like eye color or foot size, penis size is genetically determined. Additionally, men’s penises differ far less in size during an erection than during relaxation.

During puberty, the penis develops at its fastest rate. Boys typically begin puberty between the ages of 9 and 14 (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Consult your physician if you’re worried about the appearance of your penis during the puberty years.

Usually, a man’s penis reaches its typical size by the end of puberty, which in boys tends to end around the ages of 16 to 17, although this varies (Source: Cleveland Clinic).

Guys are curious about the appearance of their penis in addition to its size. A man could ask, for instance, if the skin covering his penis is normal or whether it’s acceptable for him to have his penis hang to the left or right.

How to Increase Penis Size Fast?

Medical experts state that vacuum pumps and other devices that are promoted as ways to increase the size of the penis have no scientific evidence of a lasting effect (Source: ISSM, Cleveland Clinic).

Gel-like materials called dermal fillers are often utilized in facial cosmetic treatments; penis Botox is a different injection that relaxes muscle rather than adding volume.

To temporarily enlarge the penis, physicians may inject fillers into it, which gives fast results, but satisfaction falls over time and complications include nodules, bleeding under the skin and infection (Source: Chen et al., Current Urology).

By severing the suspensory ligament that joins the penis to the pubic bone, some surgeons will try to increase the size of the penis. As a result, it seems longer and may "hang out" farther.

However, there are a number of medical risks associated with cutting the ligament, including pain, loss of sensation and instability of the shaft (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

The American Urological Association states that dividing the suspensory ligament to increase length has not been shown to be safe or effective, and the ligament can reattach and shorten the penis again (Source: AUA, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

How to Safely Increase Penis Size?

Research on penis lengthening and thickening procedures has shown conflicting findings on patient satisfaction, safety, and efficacy, and there are no guidelines or standardised techniques (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res).

Devices or methods that promise to enlarge the length or circumference of a penis are referred to as penile stretching.

This covers vacuum penis pumps, jelqing, penile traction devices, and manual stretching. There is no scientific evidence that any nonsurgical method increases length or girth (Source: ISSM).

Overall, the data supporting the effectiveness of penile stretching in increasing penis length or girth is weak: traction gives moderate, time-limited gains in length at best and is not recommended for men concerned only with girth (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, Chen et al., Current Urology).

FAQ's

Most marketed methods, including pills, lotions, supplements, pumps and jelqing, have no scientific evidence of increasing length or girth, and some can damage the penis. Traction devices give small measured gains, and surgery is generally reserved for medical conditions such as micropenis rather than cosmetic wishes (Source: ISSM, Cleveland Clinic).

Only within limits. Traction devices are the one nonsurgical option with measured results, about 0.4 to 1.7 cm of stretched length in small trials, and only with hours of daily wear for months. Surgical procedures can change length or girth in some men, but they carry real risks and are not recommended for cosmetic purposes (Source: Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, ISSM).

Nothing done at home changes the anatomy of the penis. Losing weight can reveal length hidden by fat around the base, and quitting smoking, regular exercise and a healthy weight support firmer erections. Jelqing and manual stretching have no proven effect (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, ISSM).

Ranked by the strength of the evidence: weight loss for visible length, traction devices for a small measured gain with a heavy daily time commitment, and surgery in selected medical cases. The American Urological Association states that fat injection for girth and cutting the suspensory ligament for length have not been shown to be safe or effective (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Bettocchi et al., Int J Impot Res, AUA).

No. There is no evidence that pills, gummies, creams or lotions increase penis size, and the FDA warns that products sold for sexual enhancement are likely to contain dangerous hidden ingredients (Source: Cleveland Clinic, FDA).

No. A vacuum pump makes the penis swell temporarily and is used to treat erectile dysfunction, but it does not produce lasting increases in size, and it should not be used too aggressively (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

Yes, 12 cm is within the normal range. The average erect penis is about 13.8 cm (5.4 inches), and the ISSM gives an average erect length of 4.7 to 6.3 inches (about 12 to 16 cm) (Source: Cleveland Clinic, ISSM).

No. An erect length of 17 cm is above the average of about 13.8 cm. A penis is only considered a micropenis in adults when its stretched length is 6.8 cm or less (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

Testosterone drives penis growth during puberty, which in boys usually ends around 16 to 17. In infants with micropenis, testosterone treatment often produces good penile growth, but there is no evidence that testosterone enlarges the penis of an adult with normal anatomy (Source: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic).

It carries real risks, including infection, scarring, a bend in the penis, loss of sensation or pain, erectile dysfunction and dissatisfaction, and recovery can take up to six weeks. It is generally reserved for medical conditions such as micropenis or a buried penis (Source: Cleveland Clinic, ISSM).
