Spinal injury surgery covers procedures for vertebral fractures caused by accidents, osteoporosis or tumours: spinal fracture surgery, kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. They aim to stabilise the fractured vertebra, relieve pain and reduce pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
In fracture surgery, vertebrae are fixed with screws and rods under general anaesthesia, and fragments pressing on nerves may be removed. In vertebroplasty, medical cement is injected into the compressed vertebra through a needle under X-ray guidance. In kyphoplasty, a small balloon is first inflated to restore some vertebral height before the cement is injected. Both cement procedures are often done under local or general anaesthesia.
Procedures take from about an hour to several hours. After cement procedures a patient may go home the same day or within a few days, while fixation surgery needs a longer stay and rehabilitation lasting weeks to months. Pain often eases within days after cement procedures, and full recovery may take months; the treating team decides the plan.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

They help stabilise the fractured vertebra, relieve pain and restore movement, and may ease pressure on the nerves in some injuries. The benefit varies with the type and cause of the fracture.
The medical team chooses the procedure after X-rays and MRI. Cement procedures often suit painful compression fractures, while unstable fractures or those with nerve injury often need fixation surgery. Some conditions, such as active infection, may make a procedure unsuitable.
Imaging, blood tests and an anaesthesia assessment are carried out, and the doctor sets the fasting time. Do not stop any medicine, including blood thinners, unless the doctor tells you to, and mention any allergies.
In fracture surgery, vertebrae are fixed with screws and rods under general anaesthesia. In cement procedures, a needle is passed through the skin under X-ray guidance and medical cement is injected into the vertebra, directly or after a small balloon is inflated.
After a cement procedure patients usually walk within hours or the next day. Fixation surgery needs a hospital stay and rehabilitation and physiotherapy lasting weeks to months, and a supportive brace may be advised.
Pain often eases within days after cement procedures, while the bone needs months to heal and stabilise after fixation. How long the result lasts depends on the underlying condition. Osteoporosis, for example, needs treatment to reduce the risk of new fractures.
They include infection, bleeding, cement leaking outside the vertebra, nerve injury, fractures in neighbouring vertebrae, bone that does not heal and problems with the screws, as well as anaesthetic risks. The doctor explains them according to your case.
Cement procedures usually leave only very small puncture marks, while fixation surgery leaves a scar on the back that fades with time.
Patients often need to stay about one to two weeks after a cement procedure and longer after fixation surgery, depending on the injury. The treating doctor confirms when it is safe to travel.
Often yes. The plan may include osteoporosis treatment, physical rehabilitation and regular X-ray follow-up. The treating team decides what suits your case.
