Vaginoplasty is surgery that tightens the walls of the vaginal canal and the muscles supporting them. It may be offered to women with vaginal looseness after childbirth or with ageing. The aim is to narrow the vaginal canal and strengthen the support of its walls, which may ease the feeling of looseness, though results vary.
The surgeon tightens the supporting tissues and muscles through an incision inside the vagina and removes excess lining where necessary. The incision may extend to the perineum if repair is needed there; dissolvable stitches close the wound. Surgery is usually performed under general or spinal anaesthesia and takes one to two hours.
Pain, swelling and bruising are common during the first weeks, and the doctor prescribes pain relief. Gentle hygiene is advised, with no strenuous activity or swimming. Many women return to desk work within one to two weeks and avoid intercourse for about six weeks, or as the doctor directs. The result emerges gradually and may take three to six months to settle.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

The procedure may ease a feeling of vaginal looseness and the discomfort that comes with it. Results vary between patients, and scientific evidence for functional benefit remains limited, so no particular improvement can be guaranteed.
A healthy adult woman with troublesome vaginal looseness that non-surgical measures have not eased enough, and with realistic expectations. Surgery is usually postponed if she plans pregnancy and childbirth soon, as these may change the result.
A gynaecological examination and pelvic floor assessment are performed. You are usually advised to stop smoking. The doctor decides whether and when blood-thinning medicines should be paused, so never stop prescribed drugs on your own.
The supporting tissues are tightened through an incision inside the vagina, excess lining is removed if needed, and the wound is closed with dissolvable stitches. This is done under general or spinal anaesthesia.
Pain, swelling and light bleeding are common for weeks. Gentle hygiene is advised, with no strenuous activity or swimming, and the doctor sets the date to resume intercourse, usually after about six weeks.
The result becomes clear gradually as swelling goes down over months. It may last for years, but childbirth, ageing and weight change can affect it.
Risks include bleeding, a collection of blood (haematoma), infection, delayed healing, painful intercourse, too much or too little tightening and altered sensation. Rare but serious complications include injury to the rectum or bladder and blood clots. Revision surgery is sometimes needed.
Scars are mostly inside the vagina and not visible, though a small scar may show at the perineum if that area was repaired. Scar tissue may cause tightness or pain in some patients.
Waiting at least two weeks is usually advised because of pain and the risk of clots. Your treating doctor confirms the right time for you.
Pelvic floor exercises and physiotherapy may help mild looseness and are often tried first. Your doctor advises the most suitable option after examining you.
