Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the damaged parts of the femoral head and the hip socket are removed and replaced with an artificial joint made of metal, ceramic or medical-grade plastic. It is usually considered for severe osteoarthritis, fractures or joint damage caused by other conditions, with the aim of relieving pain and improving movement and walking.
The operation is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with sedation, through an incision at the side, front or back of the hip, depending on the surgeon's judgement. The surgeon removes the femoral head, prepares the socket in the pelvis, and then fixes the implant components either directly into the bone or with bone cement.
Surgery usually takes one to two hours. Many patients begin walking with assistance on the same or the next day, together with physiotherapy. Function improves gradually over several weeks, and improvement continues for several months until the final result becomes clear.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It often relieves chronic hip pain and improves the ability to walk, stand and climb stairs, allowing many patients to return to much of their daily activity. The degree of improvement varies from one patient to another.
It is usually suitable for people with severe hip pain and stiffness that have not improved with medication and physiotherapy, and whose X-rays show joint damage. The surgeon assesses general health, age and lifestyle before deciding.
You will have blood tests, imaging, and heart and anaesthetic assessments, and the doctor will review all your medication. Do not stop any drug, especially blood thinners, unless instructed by your doctor. You may also be advised to prepare your home and do some exercises beforehand.
After anaesthesia, the surgeon opens the joint through an incision, removes the damaged bone and cartilage, and fixes the socket, the femoral stem and the artificial head. The incision is closed only after the joint is confirmed to be stable and to move properly.
Physiotherapy starts early, and at first you use crutches or a walker. Many people return to light activities within weeks, while full stability and muscle strength may take several months. You must follow the surgeon's instructions on hip movements.
Improvement usually continues for several months. An artificial joint works for many years in numerous cases, but its lifespan depends on the materials, the patient's activity level, weight and general health. Some patients may later need a revision operation or an adjustment.
They include infection, bleeding, venous blood clots, joint dislocation, differences in leg length, nerve or blood vessel injury, fractures around the joint and anaesthetic complications. The medical team takes preventive measures that reduce these risks but cannot remove them completely.
Yes, a surgical scar remains on the hip; its length and position depend on the surgical approach. Its appearance usually improves over months and fades gradually with time.
The stay is usually 10 to 14 days to monitor the wound and begin physiotherapy, and it may be longer if there are risk factors. Because air travel after hip surgery may raise the risk of clots, the treating doctor decides the timing and the preventive measures.
Yes. Depending on the surgical technique, the surgeon may advise avoiding certain movements for a period, such as bending the hip sharply, crossing the legs or sitting on low seats. These restrictions ease gradually under the guidance of the doctor and the physiotherapist.
