Sliding genioplasty is a surgical procedure in which part of the chin bone is cut and moved to a new position. The chin can be brought forward, set back, raised, lowered or re-angled, with the aim of improving the balance between the chin and the rest of the face and jaw. It is used for a small, receding, overly long or asymmetric chin.
The operation is usually done under general anaesthesia through an incision inside the mouth, so there is often no visible scar. The surgeon cuts the lower chin bone, moves it to the planned position and fixes it with small titanium plates and screws. The incision is then closed with dissolvable stitches.
Surgery commonly takes one to two hours. Swelling, bruising and numbness of the lower lip and chin are expected in the first weeks, and a soft diet and careful oral hygiene are advised. Light desk work is often possible after one to two weeks, and vigorous sport is delayed for several weeks. Most swelling settles within weeks, and the final shape appears over several months.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may improve the balance of the facial profile and adjust chin projection or height. Because the bone itself is moved, changes are generally lasting and may allow finer adjustment than an implant.
Healthy adults with a small, receding, long or asymmetric chin whose facial bones have finished growing. The surgeon examines the teeth, jaw and X-rays and may involve an orthodontist.
Blood tests, X-rays and surgical planning are usual. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without the doctor's advice, stop smoking as advised, and treat any dental or gum infection before surgery.
A section of chin bone is cut through an incision inside the mouth, moved into the planned position and fixed with plates and screws, and the tissues are closed with dissolvable stitches.
Swelling, discomfort and bruising are most noticeable in the first week, with a soft diet and mouth rinses. Light activities are often resumed after about one to two weeks according to the surgeon.
The result emerges gradually as swelling resolves over months. It generally lasts well because it depends on the bone position, although skin and soft tissues continue to change with age.
Risks include numbness or tingling of the lip and chin (usually temporary, but sometimes prolonged or lasting), infection, injury to nearby tooth roots, plate or screw problems, asymmetry, delayed bone healing, blood collection and partial relapse. Your surgeon should explain these before surgery.
There is usually no external scar because the incision is inside the mouth. In selected cases a small incision under the chin is used, and it typically fades.
Patients are commonly advised to wait about one to two weeks, and the treating doctor confirms the timing after review. Long flights carry a clot risk that should be discussed.
An implant adds an artificial shape to enlarge the chin, whereas a sliding genioplasty moves the chin bone itself and can change length, projection and direction together. The surgeon recommends the better option after assessment.
