Lower body lift (belt lipectomy) is a major operation that removes a circular band of loose skin and fat around the lower trunk, including the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks and sometimes the outer thighs. It aims to tighten the lower body and restore a smoother contour after major weight loss.
The operation is done under general anaesthesia and begins with a circular incision around the waist along the belt line. The surgeon lifts the skin and tissue, removes the excess, tightens the deeper layers, sometimes reshapes the buttocks, and closes the incision in layers, usually with drains. It may be done in one session or in two stages, depending on the case.
Surgery commonly takes three to six hours or longer, and a hospital stay of several days may be needed. Compression garments are worn for weeks, drains are removed once output falls, and strenuous activity is typically avoided for about six weeks or as the surgeon advises. Most swelling settles over months, and the final result is seen after roughly six months to a year.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may remove hanging skin around the waist, buttocks and outer thighs, improve body shape, comfort in movement and clothing fit, and sometimes reduce skin irritation in folds.
People who have kept a stable weight for several months after major weight loss, are in good health, do not smoke and have realistic expectations. The surgeon assesses weight and other medical conditions first.
Blood tests and a medical assessment are usual. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without the doctor's approval. Stopping smoking for the period the surgeon advises is essential because smoking raises the risk of wound-healing problems, and help at home should be arranged.
An incision is made around the trunk at the waistline, the skin is lifted, deeper layers are tightened and excess tissue is removed. The wound is closed in layers with drains, and dressings and compression garments are applied.
Help is needed in the first days, with gentle early walking to reduce clot risk. Desk work is often possible after about three to four weeks, and strenuous exercise is usually delayed for six weeks or more.
The contour improves gradually over months as swelling resolves. The result can last for many years if weight remains stable, but weight gain, pregnancy or ageing may alter it.
Risks include wound separation, fluid collection (seroma) or blood collection, infection, loss of skin, blood clots and pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening, bleeding, skin numbness, asymmetry, widened scars and anaesthetic risks. This is major surgery, and the surgeon should explain these in detail.
Yes. A long scar encircles the trunk, usually along the waistline where underwear can often hide it. It fades gradually but does not disappear completely.
Patients are generally advised to wait several weeks, often two to four, and the treating doctor decides the safest time because the clot risk is higher after major operations.
Sometimes it is combined with liposuction, buttock lifting or other body contouring, but longer operations increase risk. The surgeon decides what can be done in one session and what should be staged.
