Lip reduction is a cosmetic operation that reduces the size of a lip that is fuller than desired, whether naturally, after previous injections or because of a medical condition. The options include reducing only the upper or lower lip, or reducing both lips, with the aim of achieving lips that are in proportion with the face.
The operation is usually performed under local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the case. The surgeon removes a strip of the lining of the lip and some tissue beneath it, often on the inner side or along the border between the wet and dry parts of the lip, then closes the incision with absorbable stitches. The amount removed is measured carefully to avoid taking too much.
The operation commonly takes thirty minutes to an hour. Swelling and bruising last one to two weeks, and light activities can usually resume within a few days. Swelling settles gradually, and the final result usually becomes clear after about three months.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may give better balance between the lips and the rest of the face and reduce discomfort from lip size or difficulty closing the lips comfortably. Results vary from person to person.
A good candidate has a clearly large or prominent lip, is in good health and has realistic expectations. If the fullness comes from earlier injections, inflammation or a medical condition, the doctor assesses the cause first.
The doctor examines the lips and discusses the desired shape. Stopping smoking and avoiding medicines that increase bleeding may be advised as directed. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask your doctor first.
After anaesthesia, the surgeon removes a measured strip of lip lining and underlying tissue and closes the incision with absorbable stitches. The amount removed for each lip is planned according to the chosen option.
Swelling, bruising and tightness are expected, and speaking or eating may be temporarily affected. Soft foods, careful mouth hygiene and avoiding wide mouth opening are usually advised.
Most swelling settles within weeks, and the result usually stabilises after about three months. Results generally last a long time because the removed tissue does not usually return, although lips can change with ageing.
They include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, and temporary or occasionally lasting numbness. Over-reduction, lip tightness or a noticeable scar can also occur, and a further correction is sometimes needed.
The scar is usually inside the mouth or along the lip border, so it is often hard to see. It tends to improve with time, though some people develop fine lines or more visible scars.
Waiting a few days to a week for swelling to ease is usually advised. The treating doctor confirms the right time for you.
Yes. Reducing one lip requires careful measuring so it stays in harmony with the other, while reducing both lips involves planning that balances them together. The doctor chooses the most suitable option after examination.
