Hymenoplasty is a minor gynaecological surgical procedure that re-approximates the remnants of a torn hymen or reshapes its edge, and is sought for personal, social or psychological reasons. It aims to reposition the tissues of the hymen after tearing; it does not treat a disease and is not medical proof of virginity.
It is usually performed under local or light anaesthesia, and the technique depends on how much tissue remains. The surgeon sutures the remnants with fine absorbable stitches, and in some cases a small flap of adjacent vaginal tissue is used. The procedure commonly takes up to an hour.
Most women resume daily activities within a few days, while intercourse, swimming, tampons and strenuous activity are avoided for several weeks as the doctor directs. The wound generally heals over about four to six weeks, and the result is checked at a follow-up visit.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may re-approximate hymen tissue after tearing and ease psychological or social pressure for some women. It does not treat a medical condition, and the decision is personal and made after an honest consultation.
It can only bring the remaining tissue together. It cannot return the hymen to its original state, cannot guarantee bleeding at first intercourse, and cannot prove virginity medically. The hymen varies in shape and thickness between women, and some do not bleed even when it has never been torn.
An adult woman in good health who makes the decision freely, with a clear understanding of its limits. The procedure should never be done under pressure or coercion, and the doctor may check this during consultation.
A medical consultation and gynaecological examination take place, and it is advisable to schedule the procedure when not menstruating. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; the doctor decides what to adjust, and avoiding smoking is advised.
After anaesthesia the area is cleaned and the remaining edge of the hymen is identified, then the tissue is sutured with fine absorbable stitches. In some cases a flap of adjacent tissue is used for reconstruction.
Mild discomfort, swelling and slight discharge may occur for a few days, and light activities can usually resume quickly. Intercourse, swimming, tampons and strenuous exertion are avoided until the doctor permits.
The wound heals within weeks, but the repaired tissue can tear again with intercourse or injury, and no fixed duration can be promised. The functional outcome, including bleeding, is not guaranteed.
Possible problems include infection, bleeding, stitches coming apart, pain, failure to heal and the need to repeat the procedure, and a narrowed opening can cause discomfort at later intercourse. Some women are disappointed because the outcome does not meet expectations, so these limits must be explained clearly beforehand.
The stitches are fine, absorbable and placed internally, so visible external scars are not expected. Internal healing tissue can vary from woman to woman.
The procedure is minor, but a conservative approach is to avoid air travel for several days until the doctor confirms the wound is healing well. The treating doctor confirms the timing, and moving and drinking fluids during the flight is advised.
