Hand and upper limb surgery treats hand injuries and deformities, nerve compression, and nerve and tendon cuts. Its operations include hand reconstruction, carpal tunnel release and microsurgical nerve repair. The aim is to restore hand function and relieve pain and numbness as far as possible.
The technique varies with the condition. In carpal tunnel release, the ligament pressing on the median nerve is cut through a small incision or with an endoscope, often under local anaesthesia. In nerve repair, the nerve ends are sutured under a microscope, or the gap is bridged with a graft. Hand reconstruction needs an individual plan that may include tissue transfer. The type of anaesthesia depends on the operation.
Simple operations take up to an hour, while microsurgical and reconstructive ones last several hours. After simple procedures the patient often goes home the same day and frequently needs physiotherapy. Symptoms improve within weeks after carpal tunnel release, whereas repaired nerves take months, sometimes more than a year, before the final result becomes clear.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may relieve pain, numbness and weakness, improve movement and grip strength, and restore some function after injuries or nerve compression. The benefit varies with the condition.
It suits people with persistent symptoms that do not respond to non-surgical treatment such as splints and medicines, or with an injury that needs repair. The surgeon decides after examination, and possibly after nerve conduction studies or imaging.
Tests are arranged according to the type of anaesthesia and your condition. Tell the doctor about your medicines, and do not stop any of them, especially blood thinners, on your own; that decision belongs to the doctor. You will be asked to fast if the anaesthesia is general or regional.
In carpal tunnel release, the transverse ligament is cut through a small incision or with an endoscope. In nerve repair, a microscope is used to suture the two nerve ends or to bridge the gap with a graft. In hand reconstruction, bones, tendons and tissues are repaired according to the plan.
A dressing or splint is applied, and you are encouraged to move your fingers early as instructed. Physiotherapy is often needed, heavy loads are avoided for several weeks, and the splint may stay longer after nerve repair.
After carpal tunnel release, numbness often improves within days to weeks, though strength may return more slowly. A nerve regrows slowly, at roughly a millimetre a day, so improvement after nerve repair may take many months and may not be complete.
They include infection, bleeding, finger stiffness, scar pain, persistent or recurring symptoms, and injury to nerves or tendons. Some weakness or partial numbness may remain.
The response depends on the severity and duration of the injury and on the patient's age, and sensation and strength may not fully return. The surgeon explains beforehand what can realistically be expected in your case.
It leaves a scar on the palm, wrist or injury site. It is often small after carpal tunnel release and larger after reconstructive surgery, and it improves with time.
Often one to two weeks after simple procedures, and later after reconstructive or microsurgical operations. The treating doctor decides the date of travel according to your condition.
