Facial bone contouring (V-line surgery) is a group of operations that reshape the jaw and chin bones to create a softer, more balanced facial outline. It is usually considered by people with wide or prominent jaw angles or an uneven chin who want better facial proportion.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, with incisions usually inside the mouth, so there are generally no visible skin scars. The surgeon trims part of the jaw-angle bone, may reshape or reposition the chin bone, and may secure it with small plates and screws. Planning is based on a CT scan.
Surgery usually takes about two to four hours. Marked swelling and bruising appear during the first two weeks, and liquid or soft foods are used at first. Many people resume light activity after about two weeks. Swelling subsides over months, and the final result usually appears after six months to a year.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It may narrow a wide jaw, give a more balanced and smoother facial outline, and correct a prominent or off-centre chin. It treats the bone shape itself rather than only the soft tissue. Results depend on each person's bone structure.
A good candidate is an adult whose facial growth is complete, who is in good general health, has a prominent or uneven jaw or chin, and has realistic expectations. The surgeon confirms through examination and imaging that the problem is bony rather than due to fat or muscle.
Blood tests and a facial CT scan are usually done, and your doctor reviews your medicines. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Stopping smoking beforehand is advised, and a dental check-up is often recommended.
Under general anaesthesia, incisions are made inside the mouth. The surgeon trims or reduces the jaw-angle bone, reshapes the chin if needed, secures the bone with small plates if required, and closes the incisions with dissolvable stitches.
Significant swelling and bruising occur during the first two weeks, and speaking and chewing may be temporarily affected. Liquid and then soft foods are followed for several weeks, with mouth rinses for hygiene. A compression garment may be advised for a period.
Results appear gradually as swelling subsides, with full settling taking six months to a year. The bony change is usually permanent, but soft tissues continue to age.
Risks include bleeding, which can be heavy enough to need urgent treatment, infection, asymmetry, sagging skin, and numbness of the lower lip and chin, which can occasionally be prolonged or permanent. Rare complications include breathing difficulty from swelling, jaw fracture, injury to the facial nerve, changes in the bite, and the need for a corrective operation.
Incisions are mostly inside the mouth, so visible skin scars are generally avoided. In some cases small external incisions are needed, and they usually fade with time.
It is usually safest to wait about two weeks, sometimes longer, until swelling and wounds are stable. Your treating doctor confirms the right timing for your case.
When surgery is limited to the jaw angle or chin, the bite usually does not change, although chewing may feel different for a while. If the problem lies in the bite itself, orthodontic treatment or jaw surgery may be needed, and the doctor decides this.
