Cheek implants are solid or semi-solid implants placed surgically over the cheekbones to add projection and definition to a flat or underdeveloped midface. They are used to treat flat cheeks, to restore volume lost through ageing or injury, and to enhance facial contour and balance.
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with deep sedation. The surgeon commonly makes a small incision inside the mouth above the upper teeth, or occasionally through the lower eyelid, creates a pocket over the bone and positions the implant, which may be secured with a suture or small screw. Implants are typically silicone or porous polyethylene and are chosen to suit the face.
Surgery usually takes one to two hours. Swelling and bruising are expected and peak in the first few days, with soft foods advised for a short period. Many people return to desk work after about one to two weeks. The face settles gradually, and the final shape is usually judged after several weeks to a few months.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

They may add projection and definition to the cheekbone area, improve balance between facial features and replace some volume lost with age. Results vary from person to person and depend on bone structure and soft tissue.
A good candidate is usually an adult in good general health with flat or underprojected cheeks, or midface volume loss, and realistic expectations. The procedure is generally not advised with active facial or mouth infection or unstable medical conditions; the surgeon decides after an examination.
The surgeon usually requests health checks and reviews your medications. You may be asked to stop smoking well beforehand and to avoid blood-thinning products. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; your doctor decides.
An incision is typically made inside the mouth above the upper teeth, sometimes in the lower eyelid. A pocket is created over the cheekbone, the implant is placed and secured if needed, and the incisions are closed with fine stitches. It is done under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation.
Swelling, bruising and tightness are expected in the first days, and opening the mouth or smiling fully may feel limited for a while. Soft foods, careful mouth hygiene and avoiding pressure on the face are advised. Many people resume desk work after one to two weeks.
Most swelling settles within weeks, and the final result is usually seen after several weeks to a few months. Implants are designed to last for many years, but the face continues to age and some people need adjustment or replacement later.
Risks include infection, bleeding or a blood collection, temporary or lasting numbness of the cheek or upper lip, asymmetry and implant shifting. Infection may require implant removal, and a lower eyelid incision can affect eyelid position. Serious complications are uncommon but possible, and the surgeon explains them beforehand.
An incision inside the mouth leaves no skin scar. If the lower eyelid is used, the scar is fine and usually hidden near the lash line, and it tends to fade with time.
It is usually advised to wait several days until swelling settles and the wound is checked, and sometimes a week or longer. Your treating doctor confirms the right time after reviewing you.
Yes. An implant can be removed or replaced through a second operation if a problem arises or if you want a different shape. Some porous types can bond with tissue and are harder to remove, so discuss this with your surgeon when choosing the type.
