Implant-based breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that rebuilds the breast after a full or partial mastectomy, performed for cancer or to reduce cancer risk, using a silicone or saline implant. The surgical team aims to restore breast shape and support physical and emotional well-being, in the way that best suits each patient.
It may be performed at the same time as the mastectomy or later. The implant is placed behind or in front of the chest muscle, either directly or in two stages: a tissue expander is filled gradually over weeks, then replaced with a permanent implant. The cancer and surgical teams decide the method and timing, particularly when radiotherapy is planned.
The first stage usually takes two to four hours, followed by a short hospital stay and two to six weeks of recovery. Further procedures, such as nipple reconstruction, may be needed. The result settles gradually over several months after the permanent implant is in place.
The final cost is set after a medical consultant reviews your case and photos.

It restores breast shape and volume after mastectomy and may improve comfort in clothing and self-confidence. Sensation in the reconstructed breast is usually reduced compared with a natural breast, and outcomes vary between patients.
It often suits patients who have had a mastectomy, have enough healthy chest skin and tissue, and are in good general health. Using the patient's own tissue may be advised in some cases, such as after radiotherapy. The treating team decides after assessment.
You discuss the timing of reconstruction with your team in relation to your cancer treatment plan. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Stopping smoking is strongly advised because it impairs wound healing and raises complications.
Either an implant is placed directly at the time of mastectomy, or a tissue expander is placed and gradually filled, then replaced with a permanent implant in a second operation. The implant lies behind or in front of the chest muscle and may be supported by a surgical mesh or tissue patch.
A short hospital stay is usual, and a temporary drain may be placed. Rest for two to six weeks and avoidance of heavy lifting are generally advised, with regular follow-up. The course may be longer when several stages are needed.
The result settles gradually over several months. Implants are not lifetime devices, and they may need monitoring or replacement after many years, depending on their condition. Cancer follow-up continues as planned, because reconstruction does not replace it.
Risks include infection, bleeding, fluid collection, death of part of the chest skin, implant exposure or loss, implant shifting, hardening of the scar capsule around the implant, rupture and asymmetry. Some require another operation. A rare type of lymphoma has been linked to certain textured implants, and smoking and radiotherapy raise the risks.
Yes, a scar remains at the mastectomy site, and small additional scars may be present. They generally improve with time. The nipple can be reconstructed later in a separate procedure if the patient wishes.
It is usually safest to wait about two to four weeks, or until your doctor is satisfied that the wounds are stable, and to move regularly during the flight to reduce clot risk. Your treating team confirms the right timing.
Sometimes, but radiotherapy makes the skin less elastic and raises the risk of complications, so reconstruction with the patient's own tissue may be preferred. The cancer and surgical teams decide what is best for you.
